Therapeutic Outdoor Activities

With the warmer months in Michigan approaching and the constant teasing of nicer weather, there are great opportunities to think about what outdoor activities can be of great benefit for child development. Our parks, schools, playgrounds, and backyards can provide safe environments for the outdoor play we need, but how can we as parents or caregivers provide the “just-right challenge” to better stimulate learning and skill development?

If your child is struggling with handwriting, have them use a large stick in the sand or a chalk wand on the sidewalk to draw and trace letters, numbers, and shapes. Along with that, draw and build an “obstacle course” together to work on hopping, skipping, climbing, and balance. I am also a strong advocate for organized sports and the countless benefits they can provide for physical, social, and emotional development. Even if it is just learning the foundational skills of throwing, catching, and kicking a ball, sports should not be overlooked. The spring and summer months should provide good opportunities to sign up for various leagues for all age groups.

There are many things that can be done outdoors with family and friends.  Nature walk bingo and scavenger hunts are wonderful outdoor activities. Helping with simpler yardwork or outdoor chores are also fantastic things to do together. Planting and caring for a small vegetable garden can provide great opportunities for learning responsibility and even some future cooking tasks.

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, and I am no stranger to the internet and the nearly infinite resources it provides. I encourage you to take advantage of your preferred search engine for further ideas on spring and summer outdoor fun.
