What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle and light hands-on approach that releases tension deep within the body to relieve pain and dysfunction. CranioSacral therapy is a method that also allows the therapist to evaluate and enhance that function of the craniosacral system which is made up of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid helps maintain the physiological environment in which your brain and nervous system develop, live and function. CranioSacral therapy also focuses on the fascia throughout the body to decrease tension and tightness within. Through the gentle, hands-on method it, helps improve whole-body health and performance. Some reasons why you may get CranioSacral Therapy include: headaches/migraines, back pain, hyperactive children for calming, anxiety/stress, dizziness, normalize blood pressure, increase overall vitality, release of connective tissue, reduce acute pain, removal of metabolic waste and decrease hypertonicity.

How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

Fascia is a tough connective tissue that holds our body together. Our whole body is made up of fascia it is what keeps our organs in place so that they don’t fall to the pelvis, keeps our lungs and heart from exploding, it envelops every structure in the body. What are the functions of fascia? Fascia has structural and emotional memory, it provides a movement of internal structures, it separates and compartmentalizes parts of the body, it protects and supports structures, and it transmits flexion and extension of the craniospinal fluid. Fascia is mobile to some extent, of course under normal circumstance, they allow for physiological and subtle movements with offering little to no resistance; they also allow for gross body movements for an example throwing a football. CranioSacral Therapy is “myofascial manipulation” meaning by utilizing the subtle, gentle, hands-on approach the therapist is guiding the fascia to release tensions within the body to relieve pain and improve whole-body health and performance. When the fascia is releasing tension and or softening the patient may experience and or feel heat, lengthening, increased fluid flow or energy flow, energetic repelling (feels like opposing magnets), therapeutic pulse, and you may take several deep breaths. Also, there are other signs of fascia tension release or softening with autonomic nervous system such as muscle twitching, changes in breathing, REM (rapid eye movement), rapid blinking, gut sounds, sneezing, coughing, crying or laughing. All signs of fascial release are normal and will subside. During the session of CranioSacral Therapy, the patient becomes very relaxed and calmed along with feeling pain relief.
